Adding raised granite bar without building knee wall Description

Adding raised Granite (http://tanbrown.org) bar without building knee wall

Am planning to replace Formica Counter (http://GialloFiorito.com) top with Granite (http://tanbrown.org) (hooray!), and (http://maplered.com) want to add a raised bar. Our peninsula kitchen is adjacent to the great room, and (http://maplered.com) I am doggone sick of seeing the sink from the living room. Currently there is a 10" overhang all around, but due to the way the carpet meets the vinyl, there's only room to seat three people down at one end of the Counter (http://GialloFiorito.com) . The center section of three-part peninsula has the sink.

My cabinets (the fronts...and (http://maplered.com) I assume all around) are made of 3/4" particle board. On the great room side, there is a solid panel (of undetermined thickness) on the back side of the cabinets, giving it a smooth look.

What I want, is to add a raised bar without building a knee wall. Building said knee wall would be impractical in our kitchen/great room layout due to how the carpet and (http://maplered.com) vinyl meet near this area.

At Home Depot today, I saw a photo of a situation like mine. There were large wooden corbels attached to the back panel on the cabinet...where the lower half of the corbel was attached to the cabinet, and (http://maplered.com) the upper half appeared to be attached to a Granite (http://tanbrown.org) backsplach. Then resting on top of the backsplash and (http://maplered.com) corbels was a raised bar.

Has anyone done something like this?

My question, in short, is this: if my cabinets truly are constructed out of 3/4" particleboard...or even better, if the panel covering the back of the cabinets is also 3/4" particleboard, is there a way I could support a 10" overhang of Granite (http://tanbrown.org) by screwing corbels into my cabinet WITHOUT adding any more layers of Material (http://g654.org) or building a knee wall?

A professional Granite (http://tanbrown.org) fabricator will install the Granite (http://tanbrown.org) , but they don't install the supports.

Oh...and (http://maplered.com) is there any way to determine the thickness of that back wall without drilling through it?

TIA,

Jules

P.S. I am also considering doing something like this, but wrapping the raised portion over to the center section as well:

Any idea how this would be done.
